CANDY DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Candy Days are here again. We will be out on the streets. You
are welcome to collect any or all of the three days. Please let
our Chairman Lion Jerry Bimber know where & when you be out on
the street. He has candy and will gladly hand it out to you upon
request. We are really gearing up for another great year but, we
need your help. Some of us even think, if we make enough on
Candy Day, we won’t have to sell any calendars or raffle tickets
this year so, get on out there and sell your brains out. As
always, the club and anyone who sells candy for us are invited
to breakfast at The Grove on Friday at 6:00 a.m. Lion Jerry or
Lion Ernie will have candy available at breakfast.
Community Vision & Hearing program
Lion Scott Tobey and I are reviewing and heading our community
outreach program to help those in need of vision & hearing
exams. Currently, we have 2 teenagers who need exams and
probably glasses. We are trying a new program with Lenscrafters
of America. They will sell us $ 50.00 vouchers (good to purchase
any glasses in the store worth up to $ 90.00. The cost of the
eye exam is between $ 50.00 and $ 80.00 dollars, bringing the
total maximum cost to about $ 130.00 for glasses & exam. We have
been paying upwards of $ 250.00 - $ 300.00 for similar services
in the past and are hoping the cost savings cab help more people
in our community, who are in need. I will keep you all posted.
Where does it all go Department:
Most of us already know where our money goes but, there are some
of us in the club and a lot of people in the community who would
like to know where all their donations go. Well, this past
couple of months we sent $ 2,000.00 to NEDSRA. They are a
Special Recreational Association in North East DuPage County and
they serve a lot of communities in our area. Currently Lombard
has many residents, with special needs, who are continually
receiving benefit from this organization and we have a long
standing commitment to help them. Check out their website:

We sent $ 2,000.00 to RRAF This organization also has support
services for people with special needs. They help people to
become active participants in the work place as well as the
community. They do a lot of work with vision impaired people and
they are located right here in Lombard! Check out their website:

We gave 4 scholarship grants to 4 different students in our
local high schools, who are pursuing their education in the
Special Education field or a related program, in college. The 4
scholarships totaled $ 4,500.00. The criteria for this award to
a student, includes, financial need, Special educational
vocation and the student must reside in Lombard.
We donated $ 150.00 to sponsor a boy scout troop in Lombard.
We donated $ 600.00 to the Lombard Fire Department for the
purchase of (4) Knox Boxes. Knox boxes are for residents who
have some sort of physical disability and might not be able to
let an emergency team into their home if needed. The box is
placed on or near the front door of the resident’s home and it
holds a key for entry into the building. Only the Fire
Department has a key, which can open the boxes.
Soap Box:
We a re about to begin another year in Lionism together and I
would like to take this opportunity to ask you to remember why
you joined Lions in the first place. I hope that it was because
you thought you could give something back to the community. Some
of us live in Lombard, some work here, some have some sort of
tie to the community, some joined because their friend was a
member and you got tired of him/her bothering you to join and
some joined because they had a family member or friend who once
was helped out by the Lions. Whatever the reason, I want you to
try and remember the oath you took to SERVE. Our motto is “WE
SERVE”. We need your help. I don’t care how you help. You can
work your tail off on Candy Day. You can raise enough money to
knock Steve Kudulis and me out of the box for most Corporate
money received. You can underwrite a couple of cases of candy.
You can work all day on Pancake Day this year. You can put up or
tear down the structure we use (Sarah’s Shack) for Lilac Day.
You can come and sell brats & hot dogs or get enough cotton
candy in your hair to make you look like Bozo the clown. You can
even give the club money (yes I mean CASH), if you don’ want to
do anything else, it’s the least you can do to honor the
commitment you made when you joined. And, if you don’t want to
do any of the above, please resign. We don’t want you. We
want the Lion you promised to become!
